For many, the difficulties of life in orbit and constant exposure to zero-gee do not present an attractive picture, yet they do not wish to remain trapped among the decaying remains of Earth’s civilizations, which managed to destroy themselves with the Crash of the 94 and the later 4th Corporate War. For them, the colonies on Luna and, more particularly, Mars, provide the lure of freedom and a new life. founded in 1997, and Copernicus, founded in 2000, were the first true achievements in colonizing new worlds. But while getting to Luna is a relatively easy task, it wasn’t until the construction of the Explorer, a deep space-capable vehicle. By the American NASA and the Japanese Aerospace Bureau, and the consequent success of the NASA setting foot on Mars with its now historic Colombus mission, that the real options of colonizing other planets wasn’t really open for humans. The Colombus mission kicked off the construction of the Cryse base on Mars and the later Isidis base by the jealous EuroSpace Agency. This bases on Mars were followed by the construction of the Hall Station on Phobos and the Kirkwood Station on Ceres, and started the colonization of deep-space and the dreams of mankind to expand beyond.
And how did the marvelous colonies in other worlds came to be? The answer is: Terra Forming. Terra forming is a relatively new science which is concerned with the modification of the atmospheres and eco-systems of an entire planet to make them suitable for human colonization. Of all of the planetary bodies in the solar system, only two are positioned in a way that they could easily be modified to sustain human life. The others are either too small to maintain an atmosphere, have too large a gravity field, are far too hot or cold, or their level of radiation is lethal.
One of these planets is Earth. Humanity is successfully modifying the atmospheric conditions and ecologies of Earth so that it becomes progressively LESS suitable for sustaining life so, they had no other choice than going to the other planet, Mars, to Terra form it into the Earth they’re rapidly losing.
Desperately require skilled technicians, doctors, and scientists to aid the task of building a society on this harsh new world. Active advertising campaigns, particularly by the European Space Agency and the NASA, present an idyllic view of life on Mars: they talk about air which is free of pollutants and a non-violent society where everyone is working together in a spirit of comradeship toward a common goal. How romantic. Attractive packages are provided to highly skilled individuals to motivate them to sell their earthling belongings and undertake the arduous journey to Mars.
As a result, the off-Earth colonies are expanding rapidly. But the truth is that the conditions there are relatively basic. Both the European Space Agency and NASA maintain rigorous controls on the personnel who are allowed into the colonies, and each colony is managed by a strict colonial government reporting directly to its parent organizations. Although some colonies allow the Highriders to control a small police force, the real justice falls on the shoulders of the European police force Interpol, who is responsible for all facets of law enforcement in space, although the United States is not very happy with that, and have threatened the Europeans with a war in a myriad of passive aggressive ways that allow them to deny everything if needed.
The populations of the colonies are made up of approximately 40% workgangers, many recruited from orbit on the lure of better conditions that some are still looking for after spending most their lives living there; there is also a 35% who are in managerial positions, and a 25% of freelancers that just came to do their jobs and are wishing to go back to wherever they came from.
Based on data gathered by the 2018 European Space Agency probe, it seems that NASA was planning to launch a mission to Jupiter in early 2023, a mission aimed at conducting scientific analysis that, oddly enough, attracted an unusual interest of several corporations. Too bad the 4th Corporate War completely destroyed their plans, but one doesn’t just leave megacorporations at a cliffhanger. What are they hiding?
