Typically bodyguards, Hitmen and Mercenaries. Solos have a Combat Sense that allows the them to perceive danger, notice traps, and have an almost unearthly ability to avoid harm.
On the one hand, you have Government wars, they are loud, their armies are big and they don’t get into it unless absolutely necessary. The problem is big countries always want to police the world and want some resources that they think belong to them but they were put in another country for god knows what reason. So maybe they find it necessary more often than not.
Then you have Corporate Wars: they are small enough to keep a low profile and avoid governmental interventions, but they make Vietnam and Afghanistan look like picnics. From black ops team creating false flag terrorist attacks to extractions of researchers, when a corporation wants to acquire the talent of a competing corp and their contract doesn’t allow them to leave. And their soldiers have the best cyberware money can buy, and some that money cannot. But then you have the wars in the cities, where everybody tries their best to survive, and in too many cases that survival means the removal of someone on their way.
They all have something in common: governments need protection, Corporations need protection, and citizens worried about their well being that have enough eddies in their pocket need protection. Whether as a freelance guard or a killer for hire, or as one of the corporate cyber soldiers that enforce business deals and the company’s black operations, when they need the elite fighting machines of the Cyberpunk world they all hire the same professionals: the solos: assassins, bodyguards, killers, and soldiers. And this makes a solo a growing business.
Solos have a talent for combat, whether physical or ranged: we know how to use weapons more efficiently, we upgrade our cyberware to be stronger and faster, we use the most advanced combat drugs to give us an edge and, when everything else fails, a smart link to your gun that allows you to aim with the accuracy of your Kiroshi. We were born with a gun in our hand and our cyberware is thought to be a weapons factory.
Most solos served military time, either in a corporate army or in one of the government’s continuous “police actions” around we world, like is the case of the Solo of Solos, Morgan Blackhand, a veteran of the Central American conflict and one of the most trusted by the megacorporation Militech. You may do like him: when you’re the best of the best, you might leave the ranks of Corporate Samurai and go Ronin, freelancing your lethal talents as a killer, bodyguard or law enforcer to whoever can pay your very high rates. There is a price, though. A heavy one. When you’ve lost so much of your original meat that you’re almost a machine, your killing reflexes are so jacked up that you have to constantly restrain yourself from going berserk at any moment. Years of combat drugs taken to keep the edge give you terrible addictions, you can’t trust anyone. One night you sleep in a penthouse condo in Night City and the next in a filthy alley on the streets. But who’s not willing to pay it? So if you want to make a living out of being a killer in what you do, a Solo is your best choice.
